1. The "Motive"
This post aims to help me clarify
what I love about other people books. I mostly read book series, so I will
choose my most favorable book of each series and make 10 Top Favorite Books I’ve
ever read. Here it is:
1. Shadow Kissed from Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead
I read this book when I had Extensive
Reading in 2nd or 3rd semester, this became my first English
book that I read without the help of its Indonesian version. I manage to read
it properly with excitement since I re-read English version of the 1st
and 2nd book of this series—which I had read both of them years ago in
Indonesian translated version. But because I had waiting a long time to read the
continuance of the second book, I think Shadow Kissed is the most favorable
book from this series by Richelle Mead.
2. A Study in Scarlet from Sherlock Holmes book cases by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Sherlock Holmes is my first
English Classics—even though I read the translation version back then. I did
enjoy the mystery and cleverness of this detective from 221B Baker Street. What
I really like the most about Sherlock Holmes cases is the interaction between Holmes
and Dr. Watson. Hence, A Study In Scarlet become my most favorable cases from
Sherlock Holmes—Because in this book there are a lot of interaction between Holmes
and Watson since they first meet in this book (Watson’s curiosity and his
attitude when try to learning Sherlock Holmes unique disposition is my favorite
part of this book.)
3. Rahvayana: Aku Lala Padamu by Sujiwo Tejo
I never been so In Love with
Indonesian books before. For the first time I see the promotion of this books I
already fell for it. This book consist of Rahwana’s Letter to Shinta in modern world’s
setting. I like how this book continually making me want to have partner in
love haha (Its too sweet and romantic!) What I like from this book is the fact
that Sujiwo Tejo slipping a glimpse of informations about the real/ original
tale of Rahwana and Shinta (Ramayana).
4. The Storm of Swords from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin
This series is one of series that I read in my high school year
when I had so much time to spare. The first book of this series is absolutely
boring. But I’m glad that I being patient and wait until second book. The more
I read from 2nd to 3rd books, the more I fell in the
world of seven kingdom. It was a pleasure to being drown so deep into fiction.
Since I read Indonesian version, I only could read until this 3rd
book (because they were not translated the 4th and 5th up
until now.) This series also being one of my pushing point of why I choose to take
courses in English Study Program UTM.
5. The House of Hades from Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan
Rick Riordan is my favorite author
since junior high school. I especially love the Heroes of Olympus Series because
there are many character that appear very attractive in personality than in
other series in Rick Riordan’s Universe. The house of Hades is my most favorite
since the character experiencing the most terrible trial in the series—jump in
Tartarus (Hell according to Greek’s Myth.)
6. The Lightning Thief from Percy Jackson and Olympians series by Rick Riordan
My first book from Rick Riordan Universe.
It is clear why I love this book other than the others. Yep. Because it is my
first book of this series—and because all of them are equally good according to
my opinion.
7. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince by JK. Rowling
I love Harry Potter since it appeared
in TV. I love the fact that even though I’d been watch these movies repeatedly,
I still found the enjoyment while reading the books. My favorites books is the
Half Blood Prince because I think the plot in the novel is more complex rather
than in the movie.
8. The Fellowship of The Rings from The Lord of The Rings Series by J. R. R. Tolkien
Same goes with the previous series,
I like this book since the Hobbit start make appearance in TV. I read it while
it was Ramadhan and often tired and sleepy after Tarawih, but still, I like it.
Maybe because there are many scenes of this book that spreading ethereal
feelings—Like when they meet elves and enjoy their songs, or when they meet Tom
Bombadil and his wife. I really like Tom Bombadil and his wife.
9. Ship of the Dead from Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series by Rick Riordan
Ship of the Dead is the last book of
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. I love it because it is the part of Rick
Riordan Universe and especially fond on the ending. In this series, I have this
urge to shipping over two character: Magnus Chase and Alex Fierro. I really
have complicated feeling for Alex—because he/she described as genderfluid
existence—since she/he is the child of Loki and Loki have this characteristic
of change shape (and gender.) This series makes me gain more understanding
about Pan sexual.
10. Write Me History by Ary Nilandari
I write that I didn’t really into
Indonesian book since Rahvayana. But it is not quite describe my desire in
reading Indonesian books. At my very fist time I’m reading novel, I read teen-fiction
and Percy Jackson. The habit of reading teen-fiction still exist in me even
though at this current time my preference genre is change. But, Ary Nilandary
is my favorite author from all those teen- fiction author in Indonesia. I like her
writing style that are really resemblance cool kids. Mix of Indonesian and
English. Without using Young- Language (example: lo, gue, cuss) that
often being use in teen- fiction and metro-pop novel in Indonesia. Ary
Nilandari using proper Indonesian and English (if it is necessary.) The use of
English in her novels also not just mix and switch word, but a complete
sentence or phrase. This fact makes the less confusion and less
misunderstanding for the reader that are not used to read English in their
Indonesian novels. Other than that, I really like the characters and the Plot
of this story.
2. Why I Like Those Books
Here is the Next Question: So, What I really love about my
top 10 Favorite Books?
From the explanation, I belive I already told one by one why
I love those books, but to summarize my explanation, here it is:
First, I really love books that have good Character’s
building. All of those books have good character’s building means that they
change start from the prolog to the epilog (round character)
Second, For Fantasy and Adventure Genre, I like them to have
good world building. A Song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter and The Lord
of The Ring has the best world building since they are Epic and High Fantasy. (good
setting)
That doesn’t mean that other genre like Rick
Riordan Universe, Young Adults (Vampire Academy), Teen- fiction and Detective
genre didn’t need good world building. In these genre, world building not become
the focus of the story.
Then the last, I don’t mind if the plot is going too slow
as long as it is not too focused on unimportant thing such as LOVE. A
Song of Ice and Fire is the example of plot running so slow. But it is still
EPIC.
I say this because I experiencing such a suck
reading when the actual genre is Dystopian but the story still focused on Love between
the character until in the middle of first book. This kind of books makes me
angry because I feel like wasting my time to read this cheap romance (even
though the character’s building is good—for some people.)
3. The Similaties of Those Books
Now then, the similarities in my top 10 books is that:
One, the theme mostly about an adventure—a trip of
some character to save the world or the one he/she loves (Example: Every books
of Rick Riordan, Vampire Academy Series, Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire
also The Lord of The Rings.)
Also, the writing style is from first person point of
view. (Rick Riordan Presents, Vampire Academy, A Song of Ice and Fire,
Rahvayana, Write Me History, and Sherlock Holmes.)
Now after I think
about it, I really like an adventure genre and first person’s point of view.
